“Three Dog Night” By Miranda J. Gardner
Project Type
Poem and Image
Remembering my childhood, during wintertime, surrounded by dogs, living in a house with no heat source but a fireplace that would go out in the middle of the night. Dogs hold a special place in my heart, and it all began in that cold, drafty house.
“Three Dog Night” By Miranda Gardner
In a cold drafty house
darkness falls
surrounding a little girl
trying to sleep.
She has a home
but no room or bed to sleep in.
She lies on an old green couch
in a damp and frigid living room.
Three loving dogs envelope her
with their warmth.
They are night saviors
of small, medium and large sizes.
They are magical
to the girl freezing in the night.
They love the child
as their own.
She will smell of them
when she goes to school
in the morning.
But in the dark
they surround her
in the glacial space.
Their warmth engulfs her
until morning
when they slip away
one by one,
to protect their pack,
under the rising sun.
